Get Help for yourself

If you are being abused or neglected, there is help available to you.

Here is what you can do:

Start by calling the Police

You might think that the situation is not serious enough to involve the police. And while possible, calling the police can help to clarify and determine if the situation is criminal in nature or not. The police may also be able to provide information on other community resources available to you.

If you are in immediate danger, leave the situation now

Go to a safe place immediately, such as the home of a trusted neighbour, friend, or relative. You may also go into a business, health facility, or social agency and ask to be taken to a shelter. If you are unable to leave your home, call 911 immediately.

Confide in someone you trust

Talk to someone you trust about what is happening. This may include a friend or family member, a public health nurse or doctor, a social or home care worker, or someone at your place of worship.

Take legal action

Keep a daily record of the abuse you are experiencing. Documentation such as this will help others assist you, including in the event that you seek legal action.

All forms of abuse are immoral, and many are illegal. If warranted, a court protection order can stop or deter the abusive person from having contact with you.

Don’t blame yourself

Know that the abusive and neglect you are experiencing is not deserved, nor is it your fault. Help is available. Protect your rights, your safety, and your dignity: Contact AEAAC in your community to find out more about the help available to you where you live.

Or, for resource information in your area, as well as 24 hour support and referral, call the provincial Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818.
